Avalanche warning for region Lofoten og Vesterålen Thursday 15.04.2021

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
The danger increases when the wind picks up. Avoid areas with wind deposited snow, typically behind ridges, ribs and in gullies. Naturally released avalanches can occur where the snow is wet.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Wet snow (loose snow avalanches)

on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Loose snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Mountain weather

Wednesday 14. April 2021

3-6 mm precipitation. Strong breeze from west, changing to moderate gale from the southwest during the evening. -5 °C to 1 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Thursday 15. April 2021

4-8 mm precipitation. Moderate gale from southwest, changing to strong breeze from the southwest during the afternoon. -2 °C to 3 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
